Multi-intent handling is the ability of an artificial intelligence (AI) agent to recognise and resolve more than one request within a single interaction. A customer who says they want to pay a bill and update their address has expressed two intents. A multi-intent system handles both; a single-intent system handles one and loses the other.
How It Works
The AI detects multiple intents either within one utterance or as they emerge across the conversation. It then sequences them, resolving one request before moving to the next, while keeping the context already gathered.
Carrying context is the difficult part. The customer’s identity, account, and conversation history persist across intents, so the second request does not restart the interaction or force the customer to repeat themselves.
Why It Matters
- Real customer conversations bundle requests. Single-intent systems force customers to contact again for each remaining need, or to escalate.
- Each unhandled intent becomes a repeat contact, so multi-intent handling directly affects resolution and contact volume.
- It changes what automation can take on: not just simple single-task requests, but the messier conversations that make up much of real demand.
