Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence (AI) systems that can pursue a goal: planning steps, using tools and systems, and acting with minimal human supervision. Where a conventional model answers the request in front of it, an agentic system works out what needs to happen, in what order, and does it.
How It Works
An agentic system starts from a goal and breaks it into steps. It then executes those steps, calling other software where needed: looking up an account, processing a change, sending a confirmation. After each action it checks the result and adjusts the plan, which is what separates it from a scripted automation that breaks the moment reality deviates from the script.
Agentic AI vs Generative AI
Generative AI produces content in response to a request: an answer, a summary, an image. Agentic AI acts toward an outcome, and typically uses generative models as one component inside a larger loop of planning, tool use, and feedback. The short version: generative AI responds; agentic AI pursues.
Agentic AI in Customer Service
In contact centers, agentic AI shows up as systems that resolve requests end to end rather than answering questions about them: identifying the customer, taking the action in the underlying systems, confirming the result, and escalating with context when a human is needed. The shift is from AI that talks about the task to AI that completes it.
